This course is very comprehensive and as such, and due to the limited time during classroom settings, independent study is an essential requirement to cover all material. After registration, a packet of material which will include recommended readings will be provided prior to the first session so that participants have an opportunity to get started with the learning process.

Registration in the FOCEP CBE program includes:
  • CBE training workshop with textbooks and resources
  • Parent training curriculum for your own CBE class
  • Mentoring by your FOCEP Faculty until completion of the certification!
FOCEP training consists of theory and practice. To complete the program, each student must:
  • Have a minimum of a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Complete the course of classroom instruction in FOCEP childbirth education facilitated by a FOCEP faculty member.
  • Pass the final exam (80%).
  • Observe a 12 hour series of childbirth classes taught by an experienced childbirth educator or FOCEP preceptor. 
  • Teach a full 12 hour childbirth education class series with an approved FOCEP preceptor.
  • Observe two labor and births (one may be a cesarean birth).
  • Attend a maternal and child health community meeting.
  • Tour a birth facility.

Participants have up to one year to complete the program requirements (Exceptions can be requested). Certificates of Completion are awarded following the completion of all program requirements.  The certificate enables the holder to use the FOCEP Curriculum with pregnant women and their families. Certificates of Attendance are awarded after the successful completion of the didactic portion and passing of the exam.

~  To acquaint future childbirth educators with strategies designed to encourage completion   of basic education and improved literacy skills among clients who currently have low literacy levels.

~    To introduce the learner to the scope of childbirth education and the role of the childbirth educator.

~ To enable participants to facilitate learning among adults who frequently do not seek out structured educational experiences.

~   To provide individuals from a variety of backgrounds with a common knowledge base in pregnancy, childbirth, the newborn, the postpartum period, and parenting.

~  Newborn: Hospital care and procedures, circumcision, characteristics, behavior
~  Breastfeeding: Benefits, techniques, nutrition, formula concerns

~  Bereavement: Unexpected outcomes, acceptance and stages of grief
~  Community: Resources, Healthy Start, Breastfeeding Coalitions, others
